Tori: Kate J. Bentley
Uke: Kimberly E. Burnett
Tori's comments: This type of hip-throw is excellent for me. Being a shorter person, my uki or attacker is most likely to be taller than me. By grabbing onto my opponent’s collar or gi I am able to bend my arm and almost force it into my opponent’s armpit. By doing this, it increases my leverage and size. It makes it much easier to do the throw and my opponent’s size is not an obstacle.
Seol Nage is ideal for a tori working
with a taller uke. Here, Kate has blocked and grabbed a right roundhouse
punch with her left hand as she stepped inside the attack with her right
foot. At the same time she has grabbed the uke’s left lapel with her
right hand (either lapel will work, but the grip is usually more secure when
you grab the lapel opposite the shoulder you are attacking). As she steps
back in with her left foot, she throws her right elbow up under the uke's
right armpit. Kate’s elbow now becomes the pivot point around which
the uke will be lifted and thrown. Like
Ippon Seol Nage, the uke should
land in front of and perpendicular to the tori.
